Organizational Context
UN Women Uruguay is establishing a Femicide Observatory to build reliable, gender-sensitive information systems for responding to gender-based violence. This initiative, in collaboration with Universidad CLAEH and Feminicidio Uruguay, builds upon existing case registration. The Observatory aims to promote collective memory, social denunciation, and visibility of femicides, generate rigorous data for analysis, and influence public policy through collaborative evidence-building between academia and civil society.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to support the Femicide Observatory team in identifying and documenting journalistic sources for historical femicide cases. The volunteer will review existing cases, identify missing press release URLs, and update the database with findings. This role contributes to generating publicly available data to deepen research on femicide and other gender-based violence in Uruguay. The work supports fostering collaboration between academia, activism, media, and state institutions to propose policies for prevention and eradication of gender-based violence, and to innovate in research methodologies.
Responsibilities
The volunteer will be responsible for searching for and documenting press notes for a defined set of historical femicide cases, aiming to identify at least one relevant URL per case where information is missing. This will primarily involve digital searches, with potential for archival research. The volunteer will update the project's database with the identified sources and participate in planning meetings. Key deliverables include an updated database for assigned cases, a record of identified journalistic sources, and a final report detailing search activities and reviewed cases. The role requires approximately 16-20 hours per week, with flexible scheduling coordinated with the supervisor.
Work Experience
Valued experience includes demonstrated skills in newspaper research (hemerographic research) and familiarity with data recording tools such as spreadsheets or databases. A strong interest in the themes and objectives of the Femicide Observatory is also desirable. The ability to work autonomously, remotely, and as part of a team is required.
Skills
Proficiency in Spanish (fluent) is required. Desired skills include demonstrated abilities in newspaper research and knowledge of data recording tools. The volunteer should possess the capacity to work independently, remotely, and collaboratively within a team. An interest in the Observatory's mission and objectives is essential.
