Organizational Context
The UN Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) was established to stimulate economic activity, strengthen cooperation, and promote development among its member countries. It provides a framework for policy harmonization, coordination, and knowledge exchange, aiming to support economic and social development and regional integration. ESCWA also works to raise global awareness of the region's circumstances and needs, coordinating with various UN entities and international organizations.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports ESCWA's mandate to promote human development and democratic transition in the Arab region, specifically through its programs in Syria. The role will contribute to the implementation of ESCWA's program on Syria and other related research, policy, and technical assistance activities. The UN Volunteer Team Assistant will provide crucial administrative, coordination, and operational support to facilitate program activities. This includes monitoring workplans, contributing to reporting, conducting research, organizing events, and managing documentation, all aimed at supporting evidence-based policymaking and institutional recovery in conflict-affected contexts.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer Team Assistant will provide comprehensive administrative, programme coordination, and operational support. Key duties include assisting in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of programme workplans, ensuring timely follow-up on deliverables and reporting. The role involves contributing to monitoring and evaluation by maintaining tools and tracking progress. Responsibilities also include conducting background research, compiling information, and maintaining programme documentation and databases for effective knowledge management. Additionally, the assistant will coordinate the organization of meetings and events, prepare agendas and minutes, and monitor follow-up actions. Expanding the network of experts, supporting coordination with partners, and monitoring regional developments through media analysis are also key tasks. The role includes preparing communication materials, presentations, and web content, as well as providing administrative support for travel, procurement, and consultant recruitment.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required. Experience in administration, programme support, or a related area is desirable. Prior experience with the United Nations or knowledge of its rules and procedures is considered an asset.
Skills
Core competencies include accountability, adaptability, flexibility, planning, organizing, and professionalism. Technical skills in administration and legal affairs are also relevant. Good communication and teamwork skills are essential for this role.
