Research Assistant
Organizational Context
The UN Economic Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) supports economic and social development in member countries, fostering cooperation, exchange of experiences, and regional integration. It acts as a platform for policy formulation, coordination, and knowledge sharing. ESCWA also implements programmes in conflict and transition contexts, such as Syria, to promote human development and democratic transition, providing policy research and institutional support.
Job Purpose
This role supports ESCWA's programme in Syria and other regional research, policy, and technical assistance activities focused on conflict, governance, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery. The assignment contributes to promoting human development and democratic transition in the Arab region. The incumbent will conduct research, analyze data, produce policy-relevant outputs, and support programme planning and implementation, drawing on ESCWA's extensive engagement in Syria since 2012.
Responsibilities
Conduct in-depth research and literature reviews on public policy, governance, and parliamentary development in Arabic and English. Collect, validate, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify best practices. Produce high-quality analytical outputs such as policy briefs, technical papers, and reports. Prepare presentations, briefing materials, and talking points for various stakeholders. Monitor political, governance, and socioeconomic developments in Syria and the region, providing analytical updates. Support programme planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting through analytical contributions. Maintain research databases and knowledge management systems. Assist in organizing expert consultations, workshops, and policy dialogues.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience is required. Experience in research, policy analysis, or a related field is desirable. Prior experience with the UN or knowledge of its rules and procedures is an asset.
