Delivering Africa's Jobs Future Sooner
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in approximately 170 countries, focusing on poverty eradication, reducing inequalities, and building resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In Africa, UNDP supports national development plans that align with Agenda 2063, aiming to create a continental Job Creation Platform. This initiative seeks to translate continental ambitions into tangible jobs and prosperity at country and local levels, emphasizing systemic change and nationally driven priorities.
Job Purpose
This assignment aims to explore how Africa's Development Plans can accelerate job creation. Online Volunteers will analyze selected Development Plans to identify their envisioned job futures, the necessary investment portfolios, and the institutional practices required for implementation. The goal is to contribute to a continental understanding of how these plans can function more effectively as Job Creation Platforms. By generating evidence through analysis and practitioner engagement, volunteers will help synthesize practical insights on leveraging existing development architectures to deliver jobs and advance Agenda 2063 and the SDGs more rapidly, contributing to prosperity and economic opportunity across Africa.
Responsibilities
Online Volunteers will contribute to a continental knowledge product focused on accelerating job creation in Africa. They will analyze selected Development Plans from Regional Economic Communities, Member States, or Local Authorities, viewing them as pathways to Agenda 2063. Key tasks include: articulating the 'Jobs Future' by identifying desired outcomes and indicators; identifying 'Job Creation Investment Portfolios' by organizing relevant investments and interventions; examining 'Institutional Practices for Jobs' related to coordination, financing, and monitoring; conducting at least 10 practitioner conversations to gather insights on delivery challenges and opportunities; and synthesizing findings into a concise 'Jobs Future Practice Note'. The output will inform a continental synthesis on enhancing Africa's development architecture for job creation.
