Organizational Context
UNICEF operates in over 190 countries, dedicated to saving children's lives, defending their rights, and helping them reach their full potential. The organization prioritizes the rights of all children, including those on the move, aligning with the SDGs and its Strategic Plan (2026-2029). The Youth on the Move program, a collaboration between UNICEF and UNV, offers paid volunteer opportunities for refugee, displaced, and migrant youth facing learning-to-earning barriers. In Myanmar, this initiative addresses disrupted education and livelihoods, aiming to strengthen skills development through flexible, community-based approaches.
Job Purpose
This assignment aims to support the design and delivery of relevant skilling approaches for youth and adolescents in Myanmar, addressing the significant disruptions to education and livelihoods caused by the ongoing crisis. The role will provide crucial insights into the skills needs, aspirations, and constraints faced by young people, particularly those out of school or affected by displacement. It will also involve identifying and adapting appropriate learning materials suitable for diverse learning needs and low-connectivity settings. Furthermore, the position will contribute to building the capacity of facilitators delivering skills training in community-based learning environments, ensuring effective program implementation and support for youth development.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will assess youth skills needs by conducting consultations with adolescents and youth, including those out-of-school and displaced, to understand their priority learning needs, participation barriers, and preferred learning modalities. This will involve engaging with local youth organizations and community stakeholders to validate findings and preparing a report with recommendations. The role includes identifying and adapting learning materials, reviewing existing curricula for digital, financial literacy, and job readiness, and selecting contextually relevant, open-source, and locally developed resources. Adaptation will focus on local language, cultural context, youth-friendly formats, and blended learning. Support will be provided to facilitator training sessions for community learning centers, focusing on youth engagement, participatory methods, and experiential learning. The volunteer will also help establish feedback mechanisms from learners to gather input on content and delivery, providing recommendations for continuous improvement, and collaborate on rolling out the adolescent toolkit.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 month of experience is required, with at least 1 year of demonstrated experience in volunteer work or community engagement. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, and internet is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work inclusively and collaboratively are also necessary.
Skills
Key competencies include Adaptability and Flexibility, Building Trust, Commitment and Motivation, Commitment to Continuous Learning, Communication, Empowering Others, Ethics and Values, Knowledge Sharing, Respect for Diversity, Technological Awareness, and Working in Teams. Expertise in project management, programme development, strategy, education, and community development is also required.
