Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment in Mexico City is essential for sustaining core protection activities amidst complex displacement dynamics and financial constraints faced by UNHCR Mexico. The role will support the delivery of vital protection services, including identifying and analyzing protection risks, providing counseling and referrals, and strengthening coordination with government counterparts, civil society, and other partners. The incumbent will contribute to ensuring access to asylum procedures and services for refugees, asylum-seekers, returnees, and internally displaced persons. Ultimately, this position supports the safeguarding of fundamental rights and the effective implementation of UNHCR’s protection mandate in Mexico, aligning with international commitments.
Responsibilities
The Associate Protection Officer will support UNHCR’s protection strategy in Mexico City, contributing to core protection activities aligned with UNHCR policies and Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) principles. Key duties include protection monitoring and analysis through information collection and synthesis on protection risks and profiles of persons of concern, producing analytical briefs. The role involves supporting individual case management, including identification, registration, documentation, and referrals for legal assistance, GBV, child protection, and detention, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Guidance and support will be provided to persons of concern on asylum procedures and services. Coordination with government counterparts, implementing partners, and civil society will be strengthened to enhance access to protection services and referral pathways. The incumbent will contribute to community-based protection approaches, monitor partner activities, and assist in preparing reports and briefing notes. The role also promotes the mainstreaming of protection across UNHCR interventions and supports engagement with relevant stakeholders.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required, including experience in community-based interventions and/or development cooperation projects. Experience working with UN agencies or non-governmental organizations is an asset. A strong interest in issues surrounding migrants and refugees, coupled with experience in humanitarian assistance or human rights, is highly desirable. Previous volunteer experience or exposure to diverse cultural environments is also beneficial.
