The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) Cambodia, the oldest field presence of OHCHR, works to protect human rights for all. The Public Information Officer will support the Country Representative and collaborate with programmatic units and headquarters.
Job Purpose
The Public Information Officer will oversee the communications activities of OHCHR Cambodia, supporting public outreach, campaigns, and media monitoring. This role involves establishing media contacts, drafting press releases and responses, preparing daily media reviews, and creating content for web and social media to highlight human rights successes and needs. The officer will also advise management on media trends, coordinate with the UN Communications Group, and liaise with OHCHR Headquarters. Additionally, the role includes promoting volunteerism and assisting with UNV initiatives, contributing to the office's mandate of promoting and protecting human rights in Cambodia.
Responsibilities
The Public Information Officer, under the Country Representative's supervision, will manage communications, assist with public outreach and campaigns, and monitor media. Key duties include establishing and maintaining media contacts, undertaking communication tasks and campaigns in coordination with programmatic units, drafting press releases and media responses, and preparing daily media reviews. The officer will also participate in meetings and missions, provide photographic support, draft social media posts, and coordinate with the UN Communications Group. Developing and implementing communication strategies for key events, advising management on media issues, and creating human interest stories are also essential. The role involves liaising with OHCHR Headquarters and performing other related tasks. Furthermore, the officer is expected to promote understanding of volunteerism, engage in UNV activities, and assist with the UNV Buddy Programme.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in public information, communications, journalism, or media relations is required. Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies, media engagement, and advocacy is desirable. Proficiency in MS Office, social media, and ideally graphic design and photo/video editing is needed. Experience in developing countries and with international organizations is a plus.
Skills
Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills are essential. Proven ability to work independently and in a team, manage multiple tasks under pressure, and adapt to diverse environments. Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrated expertise in public information and advocacy. Familiarity with media operations and multimedia production is beneficial. Commitment to UN core values, professionalism, and continuous learning is expected.
