Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a UN specialized agency dedicated to defeating hunger and promoting food security globally. In Tunisia, FAO supports the government in developing sustainable agri-food systems, enhancing food security, building climate resilience, managing natural resources, and fostering inclusive rural development. This UN Volunteer assignment, supported by the Swiss Embassy, focuses on youth inclusion, particularly those with disabilities, contributing to resilient and sustainable agri-food systems.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment with FAO Tunisia aims to strengthen community engagement and support the implementation of field initiatives. The volunteer will facilitate communication and awareness-raising activities with local communities and farmers, ensuring their active participation in agriculture, livelihood, and rural development programs. Key objectives include establishing effective communication channels, gathering community feedback to understand needs and challenges, and supporting the collection and documentation of essential field data. The role also involves identifying implementation challenges and proposing improvements, contributing to the effective, inclusive, and participatory delivery of FAO's programs.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the FAO Tunisia Programme Manager, the UN Volunteer will contribute to community mobilization and communication activities, as well as the implementation of field initiatives. This includes supporting the organization and execution of awareness-raising sessions and field meetings, and disseminating FAO program information to target groups. The volunteer will help establish effective communication channels with farmers and local communities, collect feedback to understand needs, and facilitate dialogue between beneficiaries, FAO teams, and local partners. Responsibilities also involve collecting and relaying community needs and feedback, documenting essential field data, and identifying potential implementation challenges. Additionally, the volunteer will support the preparation, implementation, and initial monitoring of field activities, providing logistical and organizational support, and collaborating with the program team and local partners for effective and inclusive program delivery.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required, though one month of relevant experience is desirable. A good understanding of the local context and communities in Gafsa, Medenine, and Kebili governorates is essential. Proficiency in Arabic and French (written and spoken) is required, with working knowledge of English being desirable. Familiarity with IT tools, particularly Microsoft Office, and an interest in agriculture, food security, and rural development are beneficial.
