Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) program focuses on assisting countries and coordinating actions to prevent, prepare for, detect, respond to, and recover from health emergencies. This assignment aims to strengthen emergency response teams in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically supporting the development and implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) activities in Ebola-affected areas.

Job Purpose

The incumbent will support the emergency team in developing and implementing infection prevention and control (IPC) activities in Ebola-affected zones. This role is crucial for strengthening ground-level IPC efforts against the Ebola epidemic. Responsibilities include ensuring adherence to IPC standards in healthcare and community settings, establishing triage and isolation zones, and collaborating with local authorities and partners. The position requires adaptability, as deployment locations and tasks may change based on the evolving situation and program needs.

Responsibilities

Under WHO supervision, the incumbent is responsible for implementing infection prevention and control (IPC) activities in hospital and non-hospital settings, including standard precautions, triage, and isolation zones. Key duties involve collaborating with local authorities, UN partners, and NGOs to establish strategic partnerships for IPC. The role includes ensuring the implementation of IPC activities according to existing guidelines, assisting in the improvement of IPC conditions in health facilities, and training healthcare providers in basic IPC. Responsibilities also cover maintaining databases of trained personnel and IPC supplies, ensuring availability of IPC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), verifying IPC provider vaccinations, organizing weekly IPC meetings, ensuring continuous availability of IPC supplies, facilitating documentation of best practices, and providing technical advice and ongoing training to team members and partners.

Work Experience

Requires at least 3 years of experience in implementing infection prevention and control (IPC) activities during major health emergencies like Ebola or cholera, covering prevention, detection, and response at national, regional, or global levels. Desirable experience includes knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, as well as experience with WHO, UN agencies, or relevant NGOs/humanitarian organizations.
