Organizational Context
The UNFPA Country Office in Mauritania, in collaboration with national partners, supports the government's efforts to address national challenges in sexual and reproductive health, gender, human rights, and population. The 9th UNFPA-Government of Mauritania Cooperation Programme (2024-2027) focuses on strengthening health systems and improving access to integrated, quality services for sexual and reproductive health (SRH), maternal health, and combating gender-based violence (GBV). This role supports development and humanitarian interventions in the Guidimakha region.
Job Purpose
The Technical Assistant will support the Regional Health Directorate (DRS) in the Guidimakha region to implement development and humanitarian interventions. This role is crucial for strengthening health systems and enhancing access to integrated SRH, maternal health, and GBV services. The incumbent will work closely with the DRS, health districts, and partners to improve planning, coordination, monitoring and evaluation, quality assurance, and overall performance of interventions, particularly through advanced strategies and mobile clinics serving vulnerable populations. The position contributes directly to the objectives of the UNFPA Country Programme Document (CPD) 2024-2027.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of operational plans for SRH, maternal health, and GBV interventions, including humanitarian efforts. This involves coordinating with the Regional Health Directorate, health districts, technical and financial partners, and community organizations, ensuring alignment with national priorities and the UNFPA CPD. The role provides technical support to health structures, assists in developing and disseminating technical guidelines, and strengthens the capacities of health teams and partners through training and mentorship. Responsibilities also include organizing and participating in formative supervision missions, ensuring adherence to quality standards, identifying implementation challenges, and proposing corrective measures. Data management, performance monitoring, and reporting are key, as is ensuring the availability of reproductive health supplies and supporting advanced strategies and mobile clinics to improve access for vulnerable populations. The position involves representing UNFPA in coordination mechanisms, strengthening partnerships, and contributing to advocacy and knowledge management.
Work Experience
Requires at least seven (7) years of professional experience in planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring-evaluation, or management of health programs, SRH, maternal health, GBV, or humanitarian interventions. Proven experience within the Mauritanian health system, with capacity building, technical support, and coordination with health authorities and partners is essential. Familiarity with humanitarian approaches and international standards is advantageous. Strong analytical, reporting, planning, and organizational skills are required, along with proficiency in IT tools.
