Organizational Context

UNICEF's core mission is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, through its programs, advocacy, and operations. The equity strategy focuses on the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translating this commitment into action. In Madagascar, the southern region faces chronic water access challenges exacerbated by climate variability and natural resource degradation. UNICEF is promoting sand dam technology to enhance community resilience and improve sustainable water access, working in partnership with technical experts, NGOs, and regional authorities to scale up this intervention.

Job Purpose

The UN Volunteer will support the operational coordination and monitoring of sand dam construction activities in Southern Madagascar, contributing to UNICEF's efforts to enhance community resilience and sustainable water access. This role involves close collaboration with UNICEF teams, technical experts, partner NGOs, and regional water authorities. The volunteer will facilitate the planning, logistics, and execution of construction projects, ensuring efficient resource utilization and timely progress. By supporting the documentation of best practices and lessons learned, the volunteer will play a key role in scaling up and sustaining the sand dam approach in Madagascar, ultimately contributing to improved water security and climate change adaptation for vulnerable communities.

Responsibilities

The UN Volunteer will report to the WASH Specialist and be responsible for the operational coordination of sand dam construction in Southern Madagascar. Key duties include: coordinating field activities among UNICEF, partner NGOs, ASDF, MEAH, and DREAH, with a focus on logistics; supporting the planning and organization of constructions, including schedules, budgets, financial/administrative requests, and material procurement/transport; monitoring operational needs on construction sites, resolving constraints, and reporting on challenges affecting progress; managing and tracking construction materials and equipment stocks; identifying and promoting solutions to optimize resources, reduce costs, and improve efficiency; participating in documenting experiences, best practices, and lessons learned for scaling up and sustainability; and performing other coordination support tasks as needed.

Work Experience

A minimum of 3 years of confirmed experience in coordinating infrastructure works and/or managing multi-partner projects is required. Experience in WASH, water resources, or hydraulic infrastructure sectors is desirable. Experience with sand dam projects or other climate-resilient water supply solutions is an asset. Strong organizational, planning, and operational monitoring skills are essential, as is the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
