Assistant Human Rights Officer
Organizational Context
The OHCHR Country Office in Tunisia works to advance peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights for all, aligning with the UN Secretary-General's Call to Action for Human Rights. It monitors and improves the human rights situation, integrates human rights into UN Country Team activities, and supports a human rights-based approach to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The office operates under a Host Country Agreement and its mandate is rooted in international human rights instruments, focusing on people-centered approaches and supporting vulnerable groups.
Job Purpose
The Assistant Human Rights Officer will support the OHCHR Country Office in Tunisia by contributing to human rights monitoring, research, analysis, capacity development, coordination, and community engagement. The role involves documenting human rights developments, analyzing trends with a focus on vulnerable groups and gender equality, and preparing reports. The incumbent will assist in organizing and delivering human rights training, integrating a human rights-based approach into UN programs, and engaging with civil society and marginalized communities. This position aims to strengthen the human rights dimension of UN activities and support the prevention and response to human rights violations in Tunisia.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Human Rights Officer will support human rights monitoring, research, and reporting by documenting developments, collecting and analyzing information on trends, and contributing to reports and assessments. In capacity building, the role involves assisting in the planning and delivery of human rights training for various stakeholders and preparing learning materials. The position also supports human rights mainstreaming by reviewing issues, integrating a human rights-based approach into program planning, and contributing to discussions with UN partners. Community engagement includes supporting outreach to civil society and vulnerable groups to gather perspectives. Coordination involves supporting communication with government institutions, national human rights bodies, NGOs, and UN agencies, and assisting in organizing meetings. Finally, the role provides communication and advocacy support by drafting materials and assisting in disseminating information.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 month of experience is required, with 1 to 12 months of experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, or law being desirable. Professionalism, strong research and analytical skills, commitment to deadlines, and the ability to integrate gender perspectives are expected.
