Organizational Context

The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) operates under the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Established in 1999, its mandate includes protecting civilians, reducing threats from armed groups, and supporting the establishment of functional state institutions. MONUSCO is currently in a transition phase, preparing for a gradual withdrawal while continuing core responsibilities amidst a complex and deteriorating security situation, particularly in eastern DRC.

Job Purpose

This UN Volunteer assignment is with MONUSCO in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mission is adapting its posture to support civilian protection efforts in a challenging environment marked by a deteriorating security situation. The Medical Officer will contribute to the mission's core responsibilities by providing essential medical services to UN personnel. This role is crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of staff, enabling them to effectively carry out their duties in a complex peacekeeping operation and supporting the mission's transition phase.

Responsibilities

The UN Volunteer Medical Officer will provide day-to-day clinical services, including managing walk-in clinics, emergencies, medical examinations, and immunizations. Responsibilities include handling medico-surgical emergencies, organizing mass casualty incident responses, and delivering CPR/First Aid training. The role involves managing a Level 1 medical facility, supervising its operations, ensuring the availability of supplies and functioning equipment, and being on call for emergencies. Medico-administrative duties include liaising with military medical units and host-nation facilities, managing medical clearances, sick leave, specialist consultations, and medical evacuations, and deputizing for senior medical officers. The position also requires managing day-to-day medical support operations and ensuring appropriate training programs are implemented.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in medicine is required. Experience in client orientation and service is important. Affinity with humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, and the UN system is desirable. Previous experience working within a peacekeeping mission is considered an advantage.
