Junior AI Solution Developer

Organizational Context

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kenya, operating since 1966, supports sustainable development, governance reforms, and inclusive economic growth. As part of its digital transformation, UNDP Kenya is establishing a Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling for Public Servants, hosted at the Kenya School of Government. This initiative aims to enhance digital competencies across African governments, foster innovation, and accelerate digital technology adoption for improved service delivery.

Job Purpose

This UN Volunteer assignment supports the implementation phase of the Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling. The role focuses on enhancing access to emerging technologies in government for improved service delivery and efficiency. The incumbent will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of practical AI solutions for government. Specifically, the assignment involves advancing an AI-powered sentiment analysis tool from prototype to production and supporting the development of additional AI solutions to strengthen public service delivery in Kenya and the wider region, aligning with Output 2 of the Centre's mandate.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the UN Volunteer will develop an AI-powered sentiment analysis tool for government and citizen communications, progressing it from prototype to a production-ready solution. This includes designing, building, testing, and iterating on machine-learning and NLP models for text classification and sentiment analysis in English and Kiswahili. The volunteer will contribute to developing at least three local AI solutions/tools to enhance public service delivery, efficiency, and access to emerging technologies. Responsibilities also include preparing clear technical documentation, user guides, and deployment materials, applying responsible AI, data protection, and security best practices. Collaboration with the RCoC technical team, government counterparts, and stakeholders is essential for gathering requirements, demonstrating solutions, and supporting their adoption and integration into government workflows.

Work Experience

This is an entry-level assignment requiring 1 month of relevant experience. Foundational knowledge of Python and machine-learning libraries, understanding of core ML/NLP concepts, exposure to APIs and model deployment, and familiarity with version control (Git) are considered assets. Interest in responsible AI, data privacy, and AI for public service delivery, along with the ability to work with English and Kiswahili data, are also beneficial.
