Job Purpose

The Migration Health Nurse will support the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria, South Africa. Under the supervision of the Sub-Regional Migration Health Assessment Program Coordinator, Senior Migration Health Nurse, and Clinic Head, the nurse will perform essential nursing activities for migrants and refugees undergoing health assessments. This includes conducting medical examinations, collecting samples, administering vaccinations, managing TB cases, providing treatment and referrals, and ensuring accurate documentation. The role also involves educating migrants on health assessment processes and providing pre/post-counselling on communicable diseases.

Responsibilities

Perform daily nursing activities within the Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC), including medical examinations (vital signs, physical checks, sample collection), imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, treatment, and referrals. Provide clear explanations to migrants/refugees about the health assessment process and any necessary treatments. Ensure accurate identification and follow-up through comprehensive history taking, biodata collection, ID verification, and maintaining applicant registers. Adhere to established checklists, SOPs, and universal precautions. Manage and monitor pharmacy stock, medical kits, and emergency kits. Provide pre/post-counselling on TB and HIV. Prepare administrative reports and program updates. Support mobile missions and assist with pre-departure documentation. Conduct medical escort duties as required. Collaborate with internal and external partners for information sharing and follow-up. Collect and share statistical data.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience is required for Bachelor's degree holders, and five years for Diploma holders. Experience in phlebotomy, TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing, or public health is advantageous. Experience in clinical nursing, patient safety, and infection prevention and control is necessary. Computer literacy in MS Office suite is required.
