Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment aims to support UNFPA's mandate in delivering subnational population estimates crucial for humanitarian response and preparedness globally. The role involves producing Common Operational Datasets on Population Statistics (COD-PS) and drafting technical guidance for their production, quality assurance, and dissemination. The volunteer will work with the UNFPA Data and Analytics Branch in Nairobi, contributing to essential data-driven planning and response efforts. The assignment is for an initial period of 9 months, with the possibility of extension, and is residential.
Responsibilities
The Population Data Officer will provide subnational population estimates and supporting documentation for selected countries, utilizing the R statistical program and adhering to UNFPA guidance. Responsibilities include updating documentation via GitHub and UNFPA Google Drive, and assisting UNFPA staff in drafting and revising technical guidance on COD-PS production, quality assurance, and dissemination for UNFPA and UN Humanitarian Country Teams. The role also involves ensuring timely data cleaning and integration, generating and refining COD-PS for UNFPA programme countries, coordinating technically with OCHA and UNFPA offices, and uploading approved COD-PS updates to relevant portals. The volunteer is also encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate, promote voluntary action, and engage with communities.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of relevant experience in applied statistics, public health, epidemiology, or demography. Experience with descriptive statistical analysis, multivariate regression, population projections, and demographic forecasting is needed. Proficiency in R or similar statistical programming languages, familiarity with GitHub, and general computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are essential. Working knowledge of French, Arabic, or Spanish is an advantage.
