Programme Support Associate: Environmental Sustainability
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development within the UN system. In South Africa, UNEP supports national environmental priorities and SDGs implementation through the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The office plays a key role in coordinating UN agencies on climate change and environmental issues, contributing to integrated approaches for sustainable development.
Job Purpose
This assignment offers a young professional practical experience in programme support, environmental governance, and UN coordination mechanisms within UNEP South Africa. The UN Volunteer will provide administrative, coordination, and programme support to UNEP's environmental portfolio. The role also involves contributing to the planning, coordination, and documentation of Results Group 3 activities. The assignment emphasizes structured learning through mentoring and participation in programme implementation, stakeholder coordination, reporting, and inter-agency collaboration, strengthening competencies in programme administration, communication, and sustainable development.
Responsibilities
The Programme Support Associate will support programme coordination and implementation by assisting with planning, organizing meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations, and contributing to work plan execution. They will support UNCT internal coordination by assisting with the planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of joint UN initiatives, and coordinating Results Group 3 meetings. Research and data collection will involve literature reviews and compiling information on climate change, biodiversity, and environmental governance. Monitoring and reporting duties include maintaining activity trackers, collecting performance data, and compiling inputs for programme reports. Knowledge management involves organizing documentation and documenting lessons learned. Stakeholder engagement includes coordinating with government, civil society, and development partners. Communication support involves preparing presentations and awareness materials. General administrative support includes logistics, travel, procurement, and record-keeping.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required. However, one year of relevant experience is desirable, particularly in environmental sustainability, climate change, sustainable development, programme support, project coordination, stakeholder engagement, reporting, knowledge management, inter-agency coordination, or administrative support. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and skills in programme administration, report writing, meeting coordination, and professional communication are beneficial.
