Programme Support Associate: Migration Governance
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a leading intergovernmental organization promoting humane, safe, and orderly migration. In South Africa, IOM supports migration governance, sustainable development, labour mobility, border governance, and migrant inclusion. As part of the UN Country Team, IOM contributes to joint programming and partnerships, ensuring migration considerations are integrated into national development frameworks and advancing the UN principle of leaving no one behind. This role is hosted within IOM South Africa.
Job Purpose
This assignment offers a young professional practical experience in migration policy, donor engagement, project development, and partnership coordination within IOM South Africa. The UN Volunteer will support policy analysis, stakeholder mapping, resource mobilization, programme development and implementation, monitoring, reporting, communications, and knowledge management. Through structured mentoring and workplace learning, the volunteer will enhance skills in migration governance, results-based management, donor engagement, project implementation, strategic communications, and multi-stakeholder coordination within the UN system, contributing to effective migration governance and sustainable development outcomes.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support migration policy and research by assisting with policy research, literature reviews, stakeholder analyses, and gathering/analyzing migration data. They will aid in partnerships and stakeholder engagement by coordinating with government institutions, UN agencies, donors, and civil society, and supporting event organization. Resource mobilization support includes identifying funding opportunities, preparing donor briefs, and coordinating inputs for meetings. Project management support involves drafting concept notes and proposals, assisting with project reviews, and contributing to needs assessments. Strategic programme coordination includes monitoring progress, supporting planning and implementation, and contributing to reporting. Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting support involves data collection, report preparation, and documenting lessons learned. Knowledge management and communications support includes maintaining repositories, developing knowledge products, and preparing visibility materials. Finally, support for migration and development coordination initiatives involves assisting with integration into development planning and documenting outcomes.
Work Experience
No experience is required, but 1 year of relevant experience is desirable. Experience in migration governance, public policy, international development, partnerships, stakeholder engagement, project management, resource mobilization, research, policy analysis, knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation, or strategic communications is beneficial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and skills in research, data analysis, report writing, stakeholder engagement, proposal development, and project management support are needed.
