Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related organization, is a leading intergovernmental body committed to humane and orderly migration. IOM supports migrants globally, offering policy advice and developing responses to migration dynamics, including in emergency situations. The organization upholds human rights and the dignity of all migrants. The regional project "Labour Migration Programme - Central Asia" aims to enhance migration governance and migrant protection, while the MTM REMAP project focuses on collecting and analyzing data on displacement and human mobility in Central Asia for evidence-based programming.

Job Purpose

This UN Volunteer role supports the Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP) project, which is crucial for collecting and analyzing data on human mobility in Central Asia. The assignment contributes to evidence-based humanitarian and development programming by enhancing labour migration governance. The volunteer will conduct Baseline Mobility Assessments through interviews and surveys, ensuring accurate data collection and reporting. This role is vital for understanding migration patterns, protecting migrant workers, and improving development impacts in the region, aligning with the project's goal of better responding to labor market needs and ensuring migrant protection.

Responsibilities

The UN Volunteer will conduct village-level Baseline Mobility Assessments by interviewing key informants and international migrant workers. Responsibilities include ensuring accurate and thorough data collection, coordinating daily schedules with supervisors, and preparing necessary equipment for field visits. The volunteer will establish good relationships with key informants, validate information from multiple sources, and maintain detailed records of daily activities. Data will be submitted via KOBO, ensuring correct uploading. The role also involves documenting field challenges, maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards, respecting individual rights and informed consent, and traveling to designated areas, sometimes under challenging conditions, to complete assessments.

Work Experience

A minimum of 1 month of relevant experience is required. Desirable experience includes good knowledge of migration and development concepts, familiarity with ODK/KOBO tools, and experience working in challenging environments. Proficiency in Russian and Kazakh languages is essential.

Required skills include excellent oral and written communication in Russian and Kazakh, strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work inclusively and collaboratively. The volunteer must demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and the ability to deliver results. Familiarity with migration and development concepts and tools like ODK/KOBO is beneficial.
