Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related organization, is dedicated to humane and orderly migration benefiting migrants and society. It provides advice on migration policy and practice, supports migrants globally, and builds capacity for governments to manage mobility. IOM upholds human rights and the dignity of migrants. The "Labour Migration Programme - Central Asia" and the "Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP)" projects aim to enhance migration governance, protect migrant workers, and contribute to evidence-based programming in the region.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment supports the IOM's "Labour Migration Programme - Central Asia" and the "MTM REMAP" project. The primary purpose is to collect and analyze data on human mobility and displacement within Kazakhstan and surrounding countries. The role involves conducting individual interviews with migrants, ensuring data confidentiality and accuracy, and contributing to evidence-based humanitarian and development programming. The volunteer will play a crucial role in understanding migration dynamics, enhancing labor migration governance, and ensuring the protection of migrant workers, ultimately contributing to better policy and practice in the region.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will conduct individual face-to-face interviews with migrants, ensuring data accuracy and completeness. This includes conducting follow-up interviews, making necessary observations, and obtaining written consent for photos. A key task is developing at least one compelling migrant story and submitting a narrative report post-data collection. The volunteer must strictly adhere to IOM guidelines and the code of conduct, ensuring confidentiality, security of data, and respecting the privacy and rights of individuals surveyed. Participation in training is mandatory to understand methodologies and IOM principles. Additionally, the role involves developing fieldwork plans, coordinating daily schedules with supervisors, preparing necessary equipment, establishing positive relationships with community focal points, documenting field challenges, and submitting completed survey forms via KOBO, ensuring correct data upload.
Work Experience
A minimum of one month of relevant work experience is required. Desirable experience includes familiarity with migration and development concepts, excellent oral and written communication skills in Russian and Kazakh, strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work collaboratively. Familiarity with ODK/KOBO tools and experience in challenging environments are also beneficial.
