Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in South Africa provides critical emergency and humanitarian assistance to migrants and displaced populations. The organization focuses on enhancing preparedness and early warning systems, alongside initiating early recovery efforts for disaster risk reduction and community stabilization in areas impacted by natural and man-made disasters. This role operates within the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria.

Job Purpose

The Migration Health Physician will ensure the efficient daily operations of the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria, under the supervision of the Clinic Head and the Sub-Regional Health Assessment Programme (HAP) Coordinator. The primary purpose is to conduct comprehensive migration health assessments, meeting the technical requirements of resettlement countries. This includes managing medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB and STI treatment, pre-departure procedures, and accurate documentation. The role also involves contributing to quality improvement systems, data analysis, and reporting to ensure effective health services for migrants and refugees.

Responsibilities

Oversee the daily operations of the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in coordination with the Clinic Head. Conduct migration health assessments, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, and vaccinations, adhering to resettlement country requirements. Manage TB and sexually transmitted infections treatment, and support HIV/counselling activities, ensuring effective TB case management. Coordinate immunization and presumptive treatment programs according to technical guidelines, and assist in staff supervision and training. Implement and maintain a quality improvement system, conducting regular quality control activities and developing specific SOPs for the Pretoria MHAC. Analyze migration health data, ensure data quality, and provide regular reports. Ensure accurate data entry into MiMOSA and related databases. Contribute to the financial oversight of the MHAC, including budget preparation and cost-effective solutions. Coordinate the procurement of medical supplies and equipment. Perform other assigned duties.

Work Experience

Requires a minimum of 7 years of professional clinical experience, preferably in a multidisciplinary hospital setting, with the most recent posting within the last three years. Candidates with 4 years of relevant experience may also be considered. Essential experience includes good knowledge of clinical medicine, excellent bedside manner, and understanding of patient safety and infection prevention and control.
