Job Purpose
This UNV assignment is with MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a mission that evolved from MONUC to support a new phase of UN peacekeeping. The role involves contributing to the mission's core responsibilities, particularly civilian protection, within an increasingly complex and challenging security context. The volunteer will support efforts to adapt MONUSCO's posture, coordinate with national authorities, and engage with international partners. The assignment is crucial for maintaining stability and advancing the mission's objectives in a volatile region, requiring adaptability and effective engagement.
Responsibilities
Lead the planning, design review, and implementation of civil, architectural, and infrastructure construction projects across multiple field locations. Provide technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility assessments to close-out. Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams, monitor technical performance, and ensure timely delivery. Review engineering drawings, specifications, BoQs, and tender documentation. Prepare and review structural calculations and technical specifications for various construction elements, ensuring compliance with standards. Supervise contractors and consultants, monitor quality assurance and control procedures, and conduct site inspections. Perform preliminary site investigations, surveys, and risk assessments, including environmental considerations. Prepare material specifications and support inventory planning. Ensure compliance with environmental safeguards and sustainability principles. Support procurement and contract management, monitor project progress, and verify payments. Maintain comprehensive engineering records and contribute to technical reporting. Provide technical guidance and capacity building to junior staff and partners. Brief senior management on progress, risks, and compliance issues.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of general experience and 6 years of relevant experience in infrastructure engineering, construction management, architectural design, or building programs. Experience in project planning, design review, construction supervision, and contract administration for civil, structural, and architectural projects in field or post-conflict settings is essential. Experience with technical documentation, QA/QC procedures, HSSE standards, and environmental compliance is required. Experience in humanitarian, development, or UN field operations is an asset. Fluency in English is required.
