Job Purpose

This Associate Protection Officer position within UNHCR in Burundi aims to strengthen refugee protection mechanisms and support the well-being of persons of concern. The role involves staying informed about the political, social, and economic environment impacting refugees, and advising senior management. The incumbent will ensure that the diverse needs and capacities of refugees, including vulnerable groups, are integrated into protection strategies and operational plans. This assignment contributes to the development and implementation of effective protection measures and durable solutions, promoting the rights and safety of refugees in the region.

Responsibilities

The Associate Protection Officer will monitor the protection environment by engaging with refugees, authorities, and partners, advising senior management on relevant developments. Key responsibilities include ensuring that protection strategies and operational plans reflect the needs of all persons of concern, with a focus on age, gender, and diversity (AGD). The role involves coordinating the promotion of international refugee law and relevant policies, and overseeing the implementation and monitoring of protection programs. Providing policy guidance, operational support, and legal advice to UNHCR and partners is crucial. The officer will also monitor and intervene in protection incidents, assist in implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and advocate for necessary resources to address protection gaps. Furthermore, the position supports the development of integrated strategies for key protection priorities and promotes confidence-building measures among refugee populations and host communities.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in a protection capacity, specifically working with refugees or other persons of concern, is required. Field experience is essential. Desirable qualifications include knowledge of UN policies and procedures, good analytical skills, strong interpersonal and communication abilities in multicultural settings, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet browsing.
