Junior AI Solution Developer
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kenya supports poverty eradication and sustainable development, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting UN principles. With a focus on democratic governance and reforms, UNDP Kenya aids the country's Vision 2030 Political Pillar. Since 1966, UNDP has supported Kenya's development. Currently, UNDP Kenya is establishing a Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling for public servants, aiming to enhance digital competencies across African governments and foster innovation.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment supports the implementation phase of the Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling, specifically contributing to enhancing access to emerging technologies for improved government service delivery. The role involves designing, developing, and deploying practical AI solutions for government. A key focus will be advancing an AI-powered sentiment analysis tool from prototype to production for government and citizen communications. Additionally, the assignment will support the creation of other AI solutions to strengthen public service delivery in Kenya and the wider region, fostering innovation and digital transformation within public administration.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will develop an AI-powered sentiment analysis tool, progressing it from prototype to a production-ready solution for government use. This includes designing, building, testing, and iterating on machine learning and NLP models for text classification and sentiment analysis in English and Kiswahili, ensuring improved accuracy and usability based on feedback. The volunteer will contribute to developing at least three local AI solutions to enhance public service delivery, efficiency, and access to emerging technologies. Responsibilities also include preparing clear technical documentation, user guides, and deployment materials, while adhering to responsible AI, data protection, and security best practices. Collaboration with the RCoC technical team, government counterparts, and stakeholders is essential for gathering requirements, demonstrating solutions, and supporting their adoption and integration into government workflows.
Work Experience
This is an entry-level position requiring one month of relevant experience. Foundational knowledge of Python and machine learning libraries, understanding of core ML/NLP concepts, experience with APIs and application deployment, and familiarity with version control (Git) are considered assets. An interest in responsible AI and working with English and Kiswahili language data is beneficial. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are expected.
