The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) was established in 1968 to assist intergovernmental, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in developing and implementing crime prevention and criminal justice policies. UNICRI focuses on action-oriented analysis and integrated technical assistance, with current priorities in justice reform, financial and emerging crimes, and security governance. As part of the EU's CBRN Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative, UNICRI develops capacity-building and training packages to enhance capabilities in CBRN crimes.

Job Purpose

This online volunteering assignment aims to support the 'Building a case for Prosecution' training in Moldova by providing accurate translations of training materials from English to Romanian. The purpose is to facilitate effective knowledge dissemination and enhance capacity-building efforts within the region. The successful translation of presentations, notes, questionnaires, and handouts will ensure that participants can fully engage with the content, leading to improved understanding and application of prosecution strategies for CBRN crimes. This contribution is vital for strengthening regional expertise and promoting justice.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility is to translate and proofread training materials from English to Romanian. This includes approximately 45 PowerPoint presentations (up to 20 slides each), accompanying notes (around 15 A4 pages), training questionnaires (about 20 A4 pages), and other related documents (around 25 A4 pages). The volunteer must ensure the accuracy, consistency, and clarity of all translations, preserving the original meaning and cultural appropriateness. Quality control involves cross-checking translated content against original documents. Additionally, the volunteer will format translated materials to match the original design and deliver them in both digital (PDF) and editable (Word) formats. Collaboration with the UNICRI team and consultants for feedback and regular communication on progress are also key responsibilities.

Work Experience

Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Romanian is required. Experience in translating technical and complex content accurately is essential. Familiarity with presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint) and document handling is also necessary.
