Design national urban policy and planning publications for Guinea-Bissau

Organizational Context

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development globally. In Guinea-Bissau since 2015, UN-Habitat focuses on urban resilience, planning, governance, and basic services, collaborating with government ministries and international partners. The agency supports normative and operational activities, including spatial planning and infrastructure projects. This role supports the finalization of key urban policy and planning documents for Guinea-Bissau, aligning with the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda.

Job Purpose

This role is to provide graphic design and layout services for three critical institutional publications in Portuguese: the Guinea-Bissau National Urbanisation Policy, and the General Urban Plans for Buba and Gabu. The volunteer will transform validated technical content into publication-ready documents, ensuring a coherent visual narrative that aligns with UN-Habitat's visual identity. The objective is to produce professional, accessible, and disseminable materials that will guide sustainable urban development, land use, and municipal investment. This contribution is vital for strengthening urban governance and enabling effective engagement with these plans by stakeholders, ultimately supporting the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and SDG 11.

Responsibilities

Under the technical supervision of UN-Habitat Guinea-Bissau, the volunteer will be responsible for the graphic design and editorial layout of one assigned institutional publication in Portuguese. This involves integrating text, tables, maps, photographs, and diagrams into a cohesive and visually appealing design, adhering to UN-Habitat's visual identity guidelines. The volunteer must produce a publication-ready file in an editable format (e.g., InDesign, Affinity Publisher) and an exported PDF suitable for print and web dissemination. Key duties include ensuring consistency across pages, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication with the technical team. The role requires autonomous remote work to meet agreed deadlines.

Work Experience

Required experience includes demonstrated expertise in graphic design and editorial layout for long-form institutional or technical publications. Proficiency in professional layout software such as InDesign or Affinity Publisher is essential. Experience integrating various content types (text, maps, images, charts) into a coherent visual narrative is necessary. Familiarity with UN or public sector visual identity standards is an asset.
