Organizational Context

The UN Human Rights Sudan Country Office, established in 2019, provides advisory services, technical assistance, and monitors human rights. It plays a crucial role in addressing Sudan's severe humanitarian and human rights crisis, integrating a human rights-based approach across humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding efforts. The office operates in a dynamic environment, collaborating with UN agencies, partners, and civil society to promote protection, accountability, and the meaningful participation of rights-holders, with a focus on gender, youth, and reducing inequalities.

Job Purpose

This role supports the UN Human Rights Sudan Country Office's efforts to address the ongoing severe humanitarian and human rights crisis. The incumbent will contribute to integrating human rights principles into humanitarian and development frameworks, monitor and report on violations of international law, and support capacity-building programs for civil society and human rights defenders. The assignment offers a unique opportunity to work within a complex emergency context, collaborating with national and international partners to strengthen protection, advance accountability, and ensure the meaningful participation of all rights-holders, particularly vulnerable groups.

Responsibilities

The Associate Human Rights Officer will contribute to human rights mainstreaming by integrating protection and human rights standards into humanitarian and development frameworks, including the Humanitarian Country Team and UN Country Team. Responsibilities include monitoring and reporting on violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, with a focus on women, girls, and persons with disabilities, including gender-based violence and socio-economic rights. The role involves supporting the design and delivery of human rights capacity-building programs for civil society and local humanitarian responders, emphasizing inclusion, gender, disability, and the 'Leave No One Behind' principle. Additionally, the officer will support programs to empower and protect Human Rights Defenders, focusing on documentation, advocacy, and enhancing referral pathways.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required. This includes experience working with civil society, human rights defenders, and/or local humanitarian responders. Experience in applying a gender perspective and 'Leave No One Behind' principles, as well as in monitoring and reporting human rights violations, is essential. Experience supporting the protection of rights for persons with disabilities is considered an asset. Skills in designing and delivering capacity-building programs and human rights monitoring/reporting are also necessary.
