Job Purpose
The Meteorologist Assistant will support MONUSCO Aviation by collecting and monitoring weather data to ensure flight safety. This role involves preparing flight weather briefings and alerting pilots and aviation staff to any weather conditions that could impact operations. The assistant will contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of air operations within the mission area, ensuring timely and accurate meteorological information is available for all flights.
Responsibilities
The Meteorologist Assistant is responsible for reporting, recording, and distributing hourly weather observations (METAR) and special weather observations (SPECI) in accordance with ICAO/WMO procedures. This includes collecting and distributing weather data and forecasts for MONUSCO and UN agency flights. The role involves preparing daily aviation weather forecasts (TAF) and weather briefing folders for regional stations to standardize procedures across the DRC. The assistant will utilize computer-based forecasting models, satellite and radar imagery, and real-time data to predict weather patterns, and prepare backup forecasts and briefing materials. Additionally, the position requires providing en route weather observations to aircrews and flight-following offices, assisting with the maintenance and calibration of meteorological instruments, and performing other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of experience is required, with 5 years of relevant experience being desirable. Expertise in weather forecast preparation, understanding weather phenomena, interpreting data, and using meteorological software and instruments is essential. Proficiency in reporting and disseminating meteorological observations in METAR format according to ICAO standards is also required.
Skills
Key skills include adaptability, flexibility, planning, organizing, and professionalism. Strong oral and written communication, drafting, and reporting skills are necessary. The ability to work effectively in a multicultural team, adapt to challenging environments, and possess solid computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications, is important.
