Job Purpose
The Meteorologist Assistant will support MONUSCO Aviation by diligently collecting and monitoring weather data. This role is crucial for preparing accurate flight weather briefings and alerting pilots and aviation staff to any weather conditions that could impact flight safety. The assistant will contribute to the overall efficiency and security of air operations within the mission area by ensuring timely and precise meteorological information is available.
Responsibilities
• Record and distribute hourly weather observations (METAR) and special weather observations (SPECI) according to ICAO/WMO standards. • Collect, record, and distribute weather observations and forecasts for MONUSCO and UN agency flights. • Prepare and issue daily aviation weather forecasts (TAF) and backup TAFs. • Disseminate weather briefing folders to regional stations to standardize procedures across the DRC. • Utilize computer-based forecasting models, satellite imagery, radar data, and real-time international weather data to predict patterns. • Provide en route weather observations to aircrews and flight-following offices. • Assist in the maintenance, inspection, and calibration of meteorological instruments and software. • Prepare daily national meteorological forecasts for the following 24 hours. • Collect international weather data to support forecasts and observations for international flights.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of experience, with 5 years of relevant experience preferred. Expertise in weather forecast preparation, understanding weather phenomena, interpreting data, and using meteorological software/instruments is essential. Proficiency in reporting meteorological observations in METAR format according to ICAO procedures is mandatory. Strong computer literacy and excellent communication skills are also necessary.
