Organizational Context
The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) was established in 1999 to support the Government of DRC in protecting civilians, stabilizing the country, and establishing functional state institutions. Operating in a complex and deteriorating security environment, MONUSCO focuses on reducing threats from armed groups, combating violence, and supporting policy-making for security sector reform. This UNV assignment is based in Kinshasa.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment supports the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) within MONUSCO in Kinshasa. The role is crucial for facilitating high-level communication and decision-making by providing essential interpretation and translation services between French and English. The incumbent will contribute to the mission's operational effectiveness by ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of information across various subjects, including political, military, legal, and administrative matters. This support is vital for MONUSCO's ongoing efforts in civilian protection and stabilization during a complex transition phase.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Office of the SRSG, the UN Volunteer will provide interpretation and translation services. Key tasks include producing self-revised translations of official documents (memos, speeches, reports) from French to English and vice versa, utilizing computer-assisted translation tools. The volunteer will also provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation at high-level meetings. Responsibilities extend to conducting terminology research, contributing to the in-house terminology database, and actively engaging in capacity development of national staff or counterparts through coaching and mentoring. This role serves as a support function to the SRSG's office.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of professional experience in both interpretation and translation between French and English is required. Experience working with the UN or other international organizations is desirable. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, with excellent oral and written communication skills, strong drafting abilities, and professionalism in document production. Interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and computer literacy are essential.
