Human Rights Communications Associate (Palestine Focus)
Organizational Context
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) works to protect human rights for all, empower individuals to realize their rights, and assist duty-bearers in upholding them. The OHCHR office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) monitors and reports on the human rights situation, provides technical assistance, and builds capacity for Palestinian authorities and civil society. It is mandated to report regularly to UN bodies and coordinates the Humanitarian Protection Cluster.
Job Purpose
This role supports the OHCHR OPT office's mandate by assisting the Head of Communications in human rights work and executing planning and organization tasks for communications and advocacy. The UN Volunteer will contribute to monitoring and reporting on human rights issues, drafting various communication materials, and supporting the production and distribution of information products for diverse audiences. The position involves maintaining communication records, assisting with website content, and responding to information requests, all aimed at enhancing the visibility and impact of OHCHR's human rights efforts in the OPT.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Communications, the UN Volunteer will research, analyze, and communicate human rights and international humanitarian law issues. Responsibilities include drafting reports, statements, and advocacy materials for various media channels, and compiling information products for print, broadcast, and social media. The role involves maintaining OHCHR OPT's public statements, press releases, and correspondence, and managing related files. Additionally, the volunteer will assist in producing and distributing information materials, conducting graphic research, and suggesting content ideas. The position also requires responding to inquiries, drafting correspondence, and supporting the maintenance of the OPT office's website.
Work Experience
While no prior experience is strictly required, a demonstrated interest or experience in human rights, advocacy, communication, journalism, or research is beneficial. Desirable experience includes using data management tools, familiarity with online media monitoring, and previous volunteer work or cross-cultural experience. Proficiency in English is essential, with Arabic considered an asset. Basic computer skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media, are necessary.
