Organizational Context
UN Women, as a leader in gender equality within the UN system, drives legislative, institutional, and social changes to close gender gaps. The Global Centre of Excellence for Gender Statistics (CEEG), in partnership with Mexico's INEGI, innovates in gender statistics production, analysis, and use. CEEG supports the Women Count initiative, focusing on emerging areas like care, violence, and climate change, with an emphasis on geospatial and citizen data. The growing use of AI presents opportunities and risks for gender statistics.
Job Purpose
This role supports UN Women's Global Centre of Excellence for Gender Statistics (CEEG) in exploring and proposing the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for gender statistics. The volunteer will contribute to developing a workstream integrating AI into statistical production, identifying gender disparities, and informing evidence-based policies. This assignment aims to enhance the volunteer's expertise at the intersection of AI, statistics, and human rights, while contributing to high-impact products that position CEEG as an international leader in ethical and gender-focused statistical innovation.
Responsibilities
Provide specialized technical support to UN Women's CEEG on the ethical and responsible use of AI for gender statistics, aligning with human rights and gender equality principles. Conduct a structured mapping of international experiences using AI or data science for gender statistics or related themes (care, violence, economic participation, climate change, digital violence), including international organizations, national statistical offices, academia, and the private sector. Identify priority areas where AI can add value to CEEG and Women Count initiatives, analyzing large datasets and integrating non-traditional sources. Develop a diagnostic report on AI's potential, technical limitations, risks (algorithmic bias, representativeness, privacy), ethical considerations, and partnership opportunities. Provide general guidelines for National Statistical Offices, academic institutions, and private sector partners. Participate in technical coordination and feedback meetings with CEEG, Women Count, and the Regional Office.
Work Experience
At least one year of proven experience in using artificial intelligence for generating gender-disaggregated data, AI projects, data analysis for public policies, or development cooperation involving AI is mandatory. One year of proven experience in systematizing information systems based on AI-generated data with a gender perspective is desirable.
