Organizational Context

UNICEF operates in challenging environments globally to support disadvantaged children and adolescents, protecting their rights. In Benin, UNICEF's Child Survival and Development Section aims to improve routine vaccination coverage, which has stagnated despite efforts. The country faces challenges including misinformation, low vaccine uptake, and outbreaks. To address these, UNICEF is supporting the development and implementation of a social and behavioral change communication strategy for vaccination in urban and peri-urban areas.

Job Purpose

This role supports UNICEF's efforts in Benin to enhance routine vaccination coverage by implementing a social and behavioral change communication strategy. The Community Volunteers will work within the Littoral department's health zones to strengthen community engagement and demand generation for vaccination. They will contribute to planning, implementing, monitoring, and documenting activities aimed at improving vaccination rates, particularly for zero-dose and under-immunized children. The volunteers will collaborate with local health authorities and community platforms to ensure effective outreach and support the overall goal of increasing vaccination acceptance and uptake.

Responsibilities

The Community Volunteers will support the development and implementation of Social and Behavioral Change (SBC) interventions and community engagement. Key duties include: implementing and monitoring communication activities for vaccination demand generation in the Littoral Department; tracking progress of the SBC strategy in health facilities; supporting community health platforms in identifying and reaching zero-dose and under-immunized children; organizing co-creation sessions for routine vaccination solutions; documenting best practices and lessons learned; and producing bi-monthly monitoring and evaluation reports. Additionally, volunteers will engage in advocacy, networking, and partnership building with community organizations and influencers. They will also support knowledge management by documenting and sharing best practices and lessons learned, and provide technical and operational support for program implementation, including field visits and progress assessment.

Work Experience

No prior experience is required. However, at least two years of experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring communication and community engagement activities related to vaccination and community health is desirable. Previous volunteer experience with a UN organization is a strong asset. Residency in the department or commune of intervention is mandatory. Proficiency in local languages (Fon, Mina, Adja, etc.) is an advantage.
