Support mapping and community outreach activities of UN Mappers
Organizational Context
The UN Volunteers (UNV) Global Service Centre in Italy (GSC ITA) supports UN missions through geospatial and crowdsourcing mapping activities. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to enhancing geospatial data accuracy and expanding the UN Mappers community. Volunteers will act as UN Mappers Ambassadors, fostering collaboration and learning about the United Nations' broader operations and the importance of open mapping.
Job Purpose
This assignment aims to support UN missions by enhancing geospatial data through crowdsourcing mapping activities. Volunteers will collaborate with the UN Maps Crowdsourcing Team and the UN Mappers community to provide accurate data and street-level base maps. A key objective is to improve community outreach, fostering and expanding the UN Mappers network. Volunteers will serve as UN Mappers Ambassadors, promoting open data and mapping initiatives within their home countries or UN mission areas, contributing to the overall mission of UNV and the UN system.
Responsibilities
The role involves contributing to UN Maps' geospatial databases by collecting, cleaning, validating, and uploading data using OpenStreetMap (OSM) and other GIS tools. Volunteers will ensure data accuracy and provide documentation of methodologies. They will also support the growth of the UN Mappers community by helping establish local/regional chapters, identifying partners, and spreading awareness through social media and online campaigns. Additionally, volunteers will organize and deliver mapathons, online training, and community mapping events, preparing training materials and collecting feedback. They will act as mentors and coordinators for local mappers, providing technical guidance and maintaining regular online contact. Collaboration with interested organizations and reporting on activities, community growth, and challenges are also key responsibilities.
Work Experience
A minimum of six months of contribution to OpenStreetMap projects is required. Experience with various OSM editors and coordination tools (e.g., iD editor, HOT Tasking Manager, JOSM, MapRoulette) is essential. Advanced mapping skills and experience in organizing mapathons or training are considered advantageous.
Skills
Proficiency in OpenStreetMap (OSM) mapping using various editors and tools is required. Skills in data collection, cleaning, validation, and uploading are necessary. Community engagement, outreach, and event organization abilities are important. Mentoring and coordination skills are desirable. Fluency in English is mandatory. A commitment to UN values and principles is expected.
