Data Analysis support for UNDP Kenya

Organizational Context

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in 170 countries, focusing on poverty eradication and environmental protection. In Kenya, UNDP's primary objective is to eliminate poverty within the framework of sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals. A significant focus is placed on democratic governance, supporting Kenya's Vision 2030, which aims to transform political governance through rule of law, electoral processes, public service delivery, transparency, accountability, and peacebuilding. The ICT Department is crucial for supporting UNDP Kenya's digital transformation strategy, enhancing data-driven operations and decision-making.

Job Purpose

This role supports UNDP Kenya's digital transformation by enhancing its capacity to collect, manage, and analyze data. The objective is to extract meaningful insights from internal and external datasets, develop interactive visual dashboards using tools like Power BI, and contribute to data quality assurance and governance. The volunteer will help bridge the gap between technical data handling and strategic decision-making, thereby improving evidence-based planning, performance monitoring, and overall operational efficiency. This contribution is vital for strengthening UNDP Kenya's data-driven approach to reporting and service delivery, ensuring more informed strategies and operations across the organization.

Responsibilities

The online volunteer will support the Head of ICT and collaborate with various teams to design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards and reports. Key duties include cleaning, transforming, and analyzing data to generate actionable insights, and contributing to the automation and optimization of reporting processes. The volunteer will connect to diverse data sources (Excel, SQL, APIs, cloud services) and build user-friendly dashboards using Power BI, incorporating various charts, tables, maps, and KPIs, with a focus on intuitive navigation and consistent design. Responsibilities also involve scheduling data refreshes, providing general ICT support, documenting data sources and logic, and managing dashboard access. Expected outputs include functional dashboards, cleaned datasets, documentation, weekly status updates, and a final report.

Work Experience

Required experience includes familiarity with Power BI, a basic understanding of DAX and Power Query (M language), proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and basic SQL knowledge. Experience within the United Nations system is also noted. Desirable experience includes knowledge of data cleaning and transformation tools such as Power BI, Power Query, Excel, SQL, and ETL tools.

Skills

Essential skills include a demonstrated interest in data analysis using Microsoft Excel and Power BI, strong organizational and time-management abilities, keen attention to detail, and the capacity to handle confidential information. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, along with proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Analytical and problem-solving skills are crucial. Fluency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable.
