Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) in Tunisia collaborates with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the health system and ensure universal access to quality healthcare, focusing on maternal, infant, and child health through a life-cycle approach. This role is supported by the Swiss Embassy in Tunisia to enhance youth inclusion, particularly for young people with disabilities, aligning with the UN Volunteer program's goals for 2024-2026.

Job Purpose

As a Community Champion for Maternal and Child Health, you will serve as a vital link between families and health centers. Your primary purpose is to raise awareness, encourage early utilization of maternal and child health services (including prenatal care, vaccination, and nutrition), and foster trust between the community and healthcare providers. This role aims to increase attendance at Maternal and Child Protection Centers, improve family knowledge of danger signs during pregnancy and early childhood, and facilitate dialogue, contributing to the WHO's strategy for Universal Health Coverage in Tunisia.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Public Health Coordinator, and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health's maternal and child health teams, the Community Champion will: Support community awareness and education by participating in simplified health sessions, delivering clear health messages, and engaging in local activities to enhance health understanding. Assist in identifying individuals needing follow-up (pregnant women, nursing mothers, young couples, etc.) and encourage adherence to medical appointments and vaccination schedules. Facilitate community-to-health service linkage by acting as a close contact point, helping overcome access barriers, and promoting positive communication and trust between the community and health workers. Gather and relay community feedback, questions, and concerns to the supervision team to improve understanding of field needs and health interventions. Participate in national and regional health campaigns (vaccination, maternal/child health, reproductive health) and assist in the basic organization of field activities, including community mobilization and initial coordination.

Work Experience

No prior experience is strictly required; however, previous volunteer experience with a civil society organization or at the community level is an asset. A commitment to community, volunteer, or social work is essential. Familiarity with local dynamics and customs, especially in rural or socio-economically vulnerable areas, is beneficial.
