Job Purpose
The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) empowers community-based organizations and civil society groups to implement innovative initiatives that yield global environmental benefits and enhance local livelihoods. As the program approaches its terminal evaluation and closure in December 2026, there is a critical need to enhance knowledge management, program visibility, systematic documentation of results, and effective dissemination of lessons learned. The Online Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting the SGP National Coordinator and Programme Associate. This support will involve meticulously documenting program achievements, developing compelling communication materials, and strengthening overall knowledge-sharing efforts. The assignment aims to ensure the program's legacy and impact are effectively captured, communicated, and utilized for future initiatives, contributing significantly to the program's successful conclusion and knowledge transfer.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the National Coordinator and in close collaboration with the Programme Associate, the Online Volunteer will undertake several key responsibilities focused on communication and knowledge management. This includes supporting the development of compelling communication and visibility materials that effectively highlight SGP achievements and impacts to diverse audiences. The volunteer will also assist in the preparation of various knowledge products, such as informative fact sheets, engaging brochures, insightful blogs, dynamic multi-media stories, and concise learning briefs. A crucial aspect of the role involves documenting lessons learned and best practices derived from SGP projects, ensuring valuable insights are systematically captured and shared. Furthermore, the volunteer will provide essential support in editing, proofreading, and formatting reports and all communication materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to professional standards. The role also encompasses assisting in the meticulous organization and archiving of program documents, photographs, videos, and other knowledge resources, facilitating efficient retrieval and preservation. Finally, the volunteer will contribute to preparing engaging communication content tailored for social media platforms, websites, presentations, and events, thereby enhancing the program's outreach and public engagement efforts as it approaches its closure phase.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience in communications, knowledge management, content development, or journalism is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate proven experience in writing, editing, proofreading, and developing high-quality communication and knowledge products. Experience in preparing various materials such as fact sheets, brochures, blogs, newsletters, reports, and social media content is essential. The ability to synthesize complex technical information into clear, concise, and engaging content for diverse audiences is also required.
Skills
Required competencies include excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills, with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Technical skills in graphic design and content creation tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite are an added advantage. Knowledge of environmental conservation, sustainable development, biodiversity, climate change, or community development programs is desirable. Fluency in both English and Kiswahili is required. The ability to work within the East Africa Time (UTC+3) zone is also an advantage for coordination.
