Organizational Context
UNESCO's mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is to support the country's development efforts aligned with its National Development Plan and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The organization aims to contribute to the 2030 Agenda and the African Union's Agenda 2063. This role operates within UNESCO's interdisciplinary team in Kinshasa, collaborating with national stakeholders and receiving technical guidance from UNESCO headquarters and regional offices.
Job Purpose
The Associate Programme Officer will support the design, coordination, and implementation of UNESCO's Science Programme in the DRC. This involves conducting in-depth research and targeted analysis to assist the member state in advancing science, technology, innovation, research, and engineering. The role focuses on addressing contemporary environmental and societal challenges and supporting the implementation of UNESCO's Recommendation on Open Science. The incumbent will contribute to initiatives fostering learning and sustainable societies, working within the UNESCO Kinshasa office and collaborating with various partners.
Responsibilities
The Associate Programme Officer will participate in work plans for the Ordinary Programme (C/5), engage in policy formulation discussions, and contribute to sector strategy development. Key duties include supporting the coordination and implementation of science programmes and projects, and monitoring their activities. The role involves contributing to the Bureau's interdisciplinary initiatives, such as preparing concept notes and assisting in project development. Additionally, the incumbent will participate in cross-sectoral activities related to the environment, biodiversity, climate change, disaster risk reduction, education for sustainable development, and the valorization of local knowledge and natural heritage, as well as social and human sciences.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 month of required experience and 1 year of relevant experience is needed. Experience in contributing to analyses and supporting public policy work, teamwork, and partner collaboration is essential. Skills in project management, including results-based approaches, budget management, planning, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting, are highly desirable. Familiarity with UNESCO and the UN system is also beneficial.
