Documentation and Research Support - UNDSS IAU (UNDSS HQ)

UNV
Organizational Context
UNDSS is responsible for providing leadership, operational support, and oversight of the UN security management system worldwide, ensuring the safest and most efficient conduct of mandated programmes. The Insight & Accountability Unit (IAU) within UNDSS Headquarters supports internal digital innovation and knowledge-management initiatives. These efforts align with UN 2.0 and the UNDSS Digital Transformation Strategy, requiring structured documentation and information management under strict UN policies on confidentiality and data security.
Job Purpose
The assignment's purpose is to provide essential documentation and research support to the UNDSS Insight & Accountability Unit (IAU) at Headquarters. This role is critical for advancing IAU's portfolio of internal digital innovation and knowledge-management initiatives, which are strategically aligned with UN 2.0 and the broader UNDSS Digital Transformation Strategy. The volunteer will contribute by preparing structured documentation, conducting thorough research, summarizing complex requirements, developing clear user guidance, creating effective training materials, and maintaining accurate meeting records. This comprehensive support is fundamental for facilitating robust planning, seamless coordination, and controlled internal implementation of various digital projects. All contributions must strictly adhere to internal governance frameworks and applicable UN policies concerning confidentiality, data handling, and information security, thereby safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring compliance.
Responsibilities
The online volunteers will provide crucial documentation and research support for UNDSS IAU's digital innovation and planning workstreams. Main duties encompass supporting comprehensive benchmarking and background research activities, preparing detailed research notes and concept note inputs, and accurately summarizing requirements and stakeholder feedback. Volunteers will also be instrumental in drafting clear user guides, developing effective training materials, and compiling precise meeting documentation. Furthermore, they will maintain structured trackers and document repositories as required to ensure organized information flow. A significant responsibility for each volunteer involves preparing one concise C4 Model documentation package, typically 6-8 pages, for a specific UNDSS IAU digital workstream. This package will thoroughly cover relevant C4 model levels, incorporating supporting notes and structured inputs. It is important to note that all background research, meeting notes, requirement summaries, or tracker updates will exclusively support this primary documentation package and will not be considered separate standalone deliverables. The ultimate goal is for these final outputs to significantly contribute to the documentation and knowledge base of the IAU innovation portfolio, ensuring that all materials are clear, well-structured, and prepared in strict adherence to internal guidance on confidentiality, data handling, and professional drafting standards.
Work Experience
Required experience includes supporting research, desk review, benchmarking, or documentation activities. Candidates must demonstrate a strong ability to prepare clear written summaries, meeting notes, and structured briefing materials. A good understanding of knowledge management, data analytics, digital transformation, or programme support within an international or public-sector context is also necessary. Desirable experience involves preparing user guides, training materials, trackers, concept-note inputs, or similar documents.
Skills
Key competencies include professionalism, integrity, planning and organizing abilities, strong communication and drafting skills, and a commitment to teamwork and stakeholder responsiveness. An innovation mindset and keen attention to detail are also recommended. Professional-level proficiency in both written and spoken English is a mandatory language requirement for this assignment.
