Data Management Support: Monitoring and Evaluation
Organizational Context
UNDP operates in over 170 countries, dedicated to eradicating poverty and reducing inequalities. In Malawi since 1964, UNDP collaborates with government, civil society, and the private sector to foster economic growth, sustainable environmental management, and democratic governance. Its Country Programme aligns with Malawi Agenda 2063 and the SDGs, addressing poverty, inequality, and vulnerability through two portfolios: Responsive Institutions and Citizen Engagement, and Resilience and Sustainable Growth.
Job Purpose
UNDP Malawi is committed to strengthening results-based management and evidence-driven programming. This assignment aims to enhance the quality, timeliness, and credibility of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) data by consolidating data management processes. This will improve tracking of beneficiary reach, disaggregated outcomes, and overall programme performance. The initiative supports alignment with corporate reporting standards (Quantum, UNINFO), improves data flows from implementing partners, and provides Senior Management with real-time visibility into programme results. The volunteer's contribution will enable evidence-based decisions, demonstrate impact to donors and government partners, and ultimately accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals in Malawi.
Responsibilities
Under the immediate supervision of the Deputy Resident Representative, Online Volunteers will strengthen M&E data management across UNDP Malawi's programme. Key responsibilities include supporting the review and refinement of M&E frameworks, data collection tools, and reporting templates to ensure alignment with UNDP corporate standards and Country Office priorities. Volunteers will assist in tracking, collecting, verifying, and compiling data on programme outputs and outcomes from implementing partners and responsible parties. They will support data quality assurance processes, including checking for completeness, consistency, and accuracy of reported data against source documentation. Maintaining and updating M&E databases, ensuring data is organized, secure, and accessible for reporting purposes, is also crucial. Furthermore, volunteers will prepare and submit periodic M&E progress reports, including data summaries, tables, and visualizations, for use by Senior Management and programme teams. Finally, they will contribute to documenting lessons learned and best practices to inform adaptive management and future programme design.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience is required in project management, programme evaluation, data management, or M&E-related roles. Familiarity with M&E concepts (indicators, disaggregation, results-based management) is essential. Experience with data collection, verification, and database maintenance is also necessary. Prior work with UN agencies or development partners is considered an advantage.
Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including basic formulas and data entry, is required. Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) and digital data collection platforms (e.g., KoboToolbox, ODK) is an advantage. Fluent English is desirable. Competencies include familiarity with M&E concepts and expertise in data collection, verification, and database maintenance.
