Organizational Context
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Benin partners with Luxembourg to empower youth, focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This project, running from 2023 to 2026, aims to transform young people aged 15-24 into agents of social and economic change. It targets vulnerable adolescents, girls, boys, and women, enhancing their resilience and autonomy to build stronger communities. The VNU will support the Health pillar under the guidance of the Team Lead and direct supervision of the ESS Project Coordinator.
Job Purpose
The National UN Volunteer will support the implementation of the UNFPA Benin program, specifically focusing on youth empowerment, sexual and reproductive health, and gender equality. This role involves assisting with program activities, fostering partnerships with youth organizations, and contributing to communication strategies. The volunteer will help develop and implement youth-focused interventions, including those related to online learning, self-care initiatives, social entrepreneurship, and advocacy. A key aspect is supporting youth centers and ensuring young people's needs are integrated into local governance, ultimately contributing to the UNFPA's mission of achieving universal access to SRHR and realizing the potential of every young person.
Responsibilities
The National UN Volunteer will support the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) program activities in Benin. Key responsibilities include assisting office operations and representing UNFPA at meetings and events. The volunteer will support the implementation of the UNFPA 2024-2026 program, focusing on SRHR, SRH, family planning, gender-based violence (GBV), and harmful practices (HP). This includes nurturing existing partnerships and developing new ones with youth organizations. The role involves monitoring innovative proposals from youth organizations and identifying opportunities for youth engagement. The volunteer will also develop the intervention strategy for the "champion" network, coordinate its internal activities, and manage its communication, including social media. Support will be provided to the Ministry of Sports for youth-related plans, and the design and organization of youth activities for the YES project. This includes developing youth-friendly content on sexual health and potential, supporting e-learning and mobile learning strategies, and promoting innovative self-care initiatives. Additionally, the volunteer will assist with social entrepreneurship support, youth center development, and advocacy efforts to ensure youth priorities are considered in local governance.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience is required. This includes demonstrated interest and/or experience in SRHR, gender equality, and GBV. Solid experience as an active member of a youth network or organization with strong youth mobilization potential is essential. Experience with the "1000 girls" initiative or the "Youth Network for Gender Equality" is an asset. Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media) are necessary, with proficiency in social media being an advantage. Knowledge of a local language is also desirable.
