Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network supporting countries in achieving sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals. UNDP Zambia is actively advancing Timbuktoo and artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, connecting research, entrepreneurship, digital infrastructure, policy, and investment to accelerate national development. This involves establishing strategic innovation and AI ecosystems, including university innovation platforms and specialized hubs, to foster African-led solutions and address development challenges.
Job Purpose
This role supports the operationalization of UNDP Zambia's Timbuktoo and AI initiatives, focusing on the EDGE AI Compute program. The objective is to bridge the gap between AI concepts and practical implementation by providing hands-on technical assistance. The AI Assistant will translate technical needs into actionable workflows, prototypes, training materials, and documentation. This position aims to build internal AI capacity, reduce reliance on external consultants, and ensure that AI initiatives deliver tangible results, foster local expertise, and enhance visibility for Zambia's Timbuktoo programmes.
Responsibilities
The Timbuktoo Artificial Intelligence Assistant will drive EDGE AI Compute work by supporting AI project setup, documenting system usage, tracking progress, and assisting with model testing and data preparation. Key duties include developing and documenting AI use cases, translating program ideas into technical briefs and implementation plans, and supporting basic data preparation and analysis. The role involves assisting in the development and testing of AI prototypes, providing technical support during innovation activities like hackathons and training sessions, and operationalizing the EDGE AI Compute Initiative by documenting infrastructure needs and user requirements. Additionally, the assistant will support AI-related programming at various hubs, map AI/digital skills needs, prepare training materials, and contribute to knowledge management by documenting successful use cases and lessons learned. The position also entails drafting reports, maintaining digital records, and ensuring documentation adheres to responsible AI principles.
Work Experience
No prior professional experience is required, but six months of relevant experience through internships, academic projects, volunteer work, or technology-related assignments is desirable. Experience or a strong interest in AI, data science, software development, or digital transformation is preferred. Practical skills in data cleaning, visualization, basic coding, or using AI tools are beneficial. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, SQL, or data visualization platforms is an advantage.
Skills
Core competencies include achieving results, innovative thinking, continuous learning, adaptability, determination, engagement, and fostering diversity and inclusion. Technical skills encompass information technology, engineering, and development program support. The role requires strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and documentation abilities, with the capacity to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
