Organizational Context
UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency promoting education, science, culture, and communication for peace and sustainable development. This role operates within the UNESCO Country Office in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), supporting the national implementation of the Development Cooperation Framework and the 2030 Agenda. The position is part of an interdisciplinary team in Kinshasa, collaborating with national stakeholders and receiving technical guidance from UNESCO headquarters and regional offices.
Job Purpose
The Associate Programme Officer will provide professional and technical support to UNESCO's Science Programme in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This involves contributing to the design, coordination, and implementation of programme activities aligned with the country's National Development Plan and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The role focuses on advancing science, technology, innovation, research, and engineering to address contemporary environmental and societal challenges, and supporting the implementation of UNESCO's Open Science Recommendation. The incumbent will conduct in-depth research and analysis, support programme initiatives for learning and sustainable societies, and work collaboratively within the UNESCO Country Office team.
Responsibilities
The Associate Programme Officer will participate in work plans and policy formulation discussions for the Ordinary Programme (C/5). Key duties include supporting the coordination and implementation of science programmes and projects, and monitoring their activities. The role involves contributing to interdisciplinary initiatives within the Country Office, such as preparing concept notes and assisting in project development. Additionally, the officer will engage in cross-sectoral activities related to the environment, biodiversity, climate change, disaster risk reduction, education for sustainable development, and the valorization of local knowledge and natural heritage, as well as social and human sciences.
Work Experience
A minimum of one month of required experience and one year of relevant experience is expected. This includes the ability to contribute to analyses and support public policy work, experience in advocacy and resource mobilization, and strong project management skills. Experience in working in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments, with government and non-governmental institutions, and familiarity with UNESCO and the UN system are also beneficial.
