Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader dedicated to fighting drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism to promote justice, the rule of law, and resilient societies. Operating in 150 countries, UNODC has a significant field presence. The Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA) oversees six countries, including Nepal, with a Regional Programme focusing on key areas like countering illicit drugs, organized crime, corruption, terrorism, and promoting criminal justice. The Nepal Programme Office, located in Kathmandu, supports regional and national initiatives.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer will support the implementation of UNODC's Programme Office Nepal's activities, working closely with the UNODC Regional Office for South Asia and the Border Management Branch. This role involves assisting in research, data collection, and knowledge management related to border criminal activities. The volunteer will contribute to project development, implementation, and coordination with national counterparts, donors, and UN partners. Key contributions include monitoring trends, formulating project proposals, facilitating communication, and supporting operational arrangements to advance UNODC's mandate in promoting security and justice within Nepal and the region.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support UNODC Nepal's programme implementation under the supervision of the Head of Office. Key responsibilities include assisting in research design, execution, and knowledge management for border-related criminal activities, and conducting context analysis to monitor trafficking trends. The role involves supporting data collection, verification, and contributing to concept notes, project proposals, and donor briefs. The volunteer will aid in executing program activities, maintaining contact with national counterparts (ministries, law enforcement, judicial authorities), and engaging with donors and international partners. Additionally, the role requires assisting in communication and coordination with UN partners and civil society, preparing situation updates and reports, promoting UNODC's mandate, mapping partners, and supporting administrative, logistical, and procurement arrangements for project activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required, preferably in crime prevention, organized crime, human rights, or related fields. Experience working with the United Nations or similar organizations is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN practices and procedures is advantageous. Previous volunteer experience or exposure to different cultures is considered a strong asset.
Skills
Essential skills include strong interpersonal abilities, cultural sensitivity, and the capacity for inclusive and collaborative work with diverse partners. The volunteer must demonstrate adaptability, professionalism, and effective planning and organizational capabilities. Proficiency in MS Office applications, database management, and general computer literacy is necessary. Core competencies include accountability, creativity, judgment, decision-making, self-management, and teamwork.
