Job Purpose
This UNV assignment supports the UN Resident Coordinator's Office (UNRCO) in Uruguay to strengthen the coordination and coherence of the UN Country Team (UNCT). The role is crucial for advancing human rights, gender equality, and the Leave No One Behind principle, in alignment with UN reform and the 2030 Agenda. The assignment will bolster inter-agency collaboration, ensuring the integration of international human rights standards and gender equality and women's empowerment (GEWE) into joint UN programming, policy dialogue, and advocacy. A key focus is supporting the implementation of the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2026-2030), ensuring human rights and GEWE are systematically embedded across UNCT priorities. The UN Volunteer will provide technical support and coordination for inter-agency initiatives, engaging with diverse stakeholders to promote inclusive, rights-based development outcomes.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, the UN Volunteer Associate will support the integration of a human rights-based approach (HRBA), gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE), and the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) principle across UNCT programming and planning. This includes collecting and analyzing qualitative data on human rights and GEWE indicators, with a focus on vulnerable populations, through stakeholder engagement. The role involves supporting UNCT initiatives related to peacebuilding and dialogue, and participating in inter-agency thematic working groups on gender equality, rights of persons of African descent, disability inclusion, and youth. The Associate will also serve as the Youth Focal Point, promoting youth engagement, and assist in identifying opportunities for joint initiatives to promote the rights of marginalized groups. Preparation of briefing notes, background materials, and reports for UN advocacy and stakeholder engagement is also a key duty.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required, but demonstrated interest or up to two years of experience in development cooperation, human rights monitoring, public policy analysis, or gender equality mainstreaming is desirable. Knowledge of international human rights standards and UN normative frameworks is an asset. Fluency in Spanish and English is required. Excellent oral and written communication, drafting, and reporting skills are essential. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work inclusively and collaboratively are important. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and database management is expected.
