Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment at UNIC Dakar focuses on enhancing information integrity within the Department of Global Communications. The role will support a 3R approach (Research, Risk assessment, Response) to bolster early warning systems, structured monitoring, and analytical reporting. The objective is to provide practical support in addressing false narratives and information risks that affect the UN's operational space, staff safety, partnerships, and credibility in West Africa, particularly in challenging information environments. The role contributes to evidence-based decision-making, crisis communications readiness, and overall UN system support in the region.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will conduct systematic research and monitoring of information environments in West Africa, focusing on identifying false narratives and emerging risks. Responsibilities include supporting the design and maintenance of monitoring tools, applying open-source methods and digital verification techniques, and coordinating with the Information Integrity Unit in New York. The role involves producing analytical outputs for internal decision support, such as trend snapshots and risk assessments, and identifying indicators of coordinated disinformation. Maintaining structured records, supporting crisis communications readiness with analytical briefings, and contributing to capacity strengthening are key tasks. The volunteer will also review and synthesize analytical inputs, ensure research quality, stay updated on evolving information risks, and prepare an end-of-assignment report.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required. This includes experience in open-source research, media monitoring, social listening, narrative analysis, information integrity, strategic communications, or crisis communications. Experience in producing analytical briefs and reports for decision-makers, involving structured monitoring, verification, and evidence-based reporting, is essential. Proficiency in analytical research, drafting, synthesis, reporting, and using monitoring tools and structured documentation methods is also necessary.
