Organizational Context
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) was established in 1950 to lead and coordinate international action for the protection of refugees worldwide. Its mandate is to safeguard their rights and well-being, ensuring they can exercise their right to seek asylum and find safe refuge. UNHCR operates globally, striving to resolve refugee problems and facilitate durable solutions such as voluntary repatriation, local integration, or resettlement.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports UNHCR's World Refugee Day campaign, aiming to raise global awareness about the plight of refugees, combat misinformation, and promote inclusion. Volunteers will contribute to amplifying the voices of displaced persons and mobilizing support for humanitarian aid and integration programs. The role offers an opportunity to engage in a high-impact global campaign, foster solidarity, and advocate for the rights and protection of refugees. Participants will gain valuable experience in communication, media, and advocacy while collaborating with a diverse team dedicated to a shared humanitarian cause.
Responsibilities
Volunteers will support UNHCR's World Refugee Day campaign by joining one of several specialized teams. Responsibilities include developing and disseminating campaign content across various social media platforms (Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, X, YouTube, Telegram), adapting messages for diverse audiences (donors, governments, host communities, media, refugees), and ensuring content reaches target communities. Specific tasks may involve creating social media posts, reels, and captions; preparing pre-launch and highlight content; writing scripts and narratives for videos featuring refugee stories; editing short videos; suggesting publication schedules based on audience activity; monitoring engagement and reach; and providing feedback for improved dissemination. Some roles may also involve proofreading translated documents to ensure cultural relevance and emotional impact.
Work Experience
While not mandatory, personal or professional experience working with refugees or displaced persons is considered an asset. The primary requirement is a strong sensitivity to the cause of refugees and displaced persons and a commitment to the protection of human rights and unconditional welcome.
Skills
Key competencies include sensitivity to the refugee cause, a strong belief in human rights, and a commitment to unconditional welcome. Desirable skills include working knowledge of French. Experience in digital communication, social media, content creation, video editing, campaign strategy, and translation/localization may be beneficial depending on the team assignment.
