Organizational Context
UNFPA's mission in the Solomon Islands is to enhance the quality of life, particularly for women, adolescents, and youth, by ensuring safe pregnancies, childbirths, and enabling young people to reach their full potential. The organization collaborates with the government and partners to improve sexual and reproductive health services, reduce maternal deaths, and combat gender-based violence. In the current context of Tropical Cyclone MALA, UNFPA is crucial in supporting the continuity of essential health services, including sexual and reproductive health, dignity kits, and protection services, especially in affected provinces.
Job Purpose
This role is vital for supporting UNFPA's response to Tropical Cyclone MALA in the Solomon Islands, focusing on Western and Choiseul Provinces. The UN Volunteer will be instrumental in ensuring the effective coordination of humanitarian supplies and robust information management. This includes facilitating the clearance of incoming shipments, overseeing the efficient distribution of life-saving supplies like SRH materials and dignity kits, and maintaining accurate reporting of field needs and gaps. Key duties include supporting provincial-level logistics and shipment clearance by coordinating humanitarian supplies with the Solomon Islands program specialist, government, and local partners, and tracking incoming and outgoing shipments of SRH and dignity kit supplies. The role involves assisting in developing provincial distribution plans for emergency supplies and supporting coordination with provincial health teams for last-mile delivery. Furthermore, the volunteer will manage information by collecting, verifying, and compiling field data from partners and provincial teams, and assisting with the 5W tracking matrix. Support will also be provided for reporting and coordination, including preparing weekly logistics and response updates for UNFPA and partners, and ensuring accurate documentation of distribution activities and beneficiary reach.
Work Experience
A minimum of one month of relevant experience is required, with entry-level, internship, or volunteer experience being acceptable. Desirable experience includes holding a valid national driver's license and proven ability to drive a manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain. Affinity with or interest in sexual and reproductive health, volunteerism for development, and the UN system is also desirable.
Skills
Essential skills include strong oral and written communication, excellent drafting and reporting abilities, accuracy in document production, and strong interpersonal skills for inclusive and collaborative work. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, database management, and general computer literacy is necessary. The role requires self-motivation, ability to work with minimal supervision and under tight deadlines, and sound security awareness.
