Organizational Context

The UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC), established in 1985 and based in Lomé, Togo, supports African Member States' initiatives for peace, arms limitation, and disarmament. UNREC collaborates with the African Union to coordinate regional activities in these areas. A communication unit is in place to enhance the visibility and institutional communication of the Centre's mandate and activities.

Job Purpose

This role supports UNREC's communication unit by designing visual materials to enhance the Centre's visibility and institutional communication. The Graphic Design Volunteer will contribute to editing documents, visuals, and communication materials, ensuring they align with UN design guidelines. The assignment aims to effectively communicate UNREC's mandate and activities related to peace, arms control, and disarmament in Africa through compelling visual content, supporting the overall objectives of the Centre and its engagement with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the UNREC Director and supervision of the Political Affairs Officer, the Graphic Design Volunteer will assist in editing documents, visuals, and communication materials. Key duties include coordinating with authors and project teams to manage publication timelines, preparing documents for final publication with appropriate formatting and digital versions, and rewriting text for clarity. The volunteer will also fact-check content using standard reference sources, assist in evaluating submissions for publication, develop story and content ideas considering the target audience, and allocate space for text, photos, and illustrations. All design and layout work must adhere to UN design guidelines.

Work Experience

Professional experience in visual design and communication tools is required. Candidates should possess in-depth knowledge of editing and publication production techniques, along with strong oral and written communication skills. Experience in graphic design is essential for this role.
