The UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC), established in 1985, supports Member States in Africa with initiatives for peace, arms limitation, and disarmament. Job Purpose
This role supports UNREC's communication unit by assisting in the editing of documents, visuals, and communication materials. The Online Volunteer will contribute to enhancing the clarity, accuracy, and consistency of UNREC's published content, ensuring it aligns with organizational standards and effectively communicates the Centre's mission and activities. By refining written materials and supporting the integration of visual elements, the volunteer will play a key role in strengthening UNREC's institutional visibility and outreach efforts within the African region, contributing to the broader goals of peace and disarmament.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteer will assist in editing documents, visuals, and communication materials for UNREC under the guidance of the Director and supervision of the Political Affairs Officer, in close collaboration with the communication team. Key duties include proofreading content for spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors; reviewing and revising manuscripts, articles, and reports for accuracy and consistency; adjusting style and tone to meet organizational editorial standards; coordinating with authors to meet deadlines; preparing documents for final publication, including formatting and digital versions; rewriting text for improved readability; fact-checking information; assisting in content evaluation; developing story ideas; and collaborating with graphic designers and web developers to integrate visual elements. All editing and layout work must adhere to UN design guidelines.
Work Experience
Professional experience in book editing is required, with prior experience in proofreading documents. A thorough understanding of editing and book production techniques is essential, alongside strong oral and written communication skills.
Skills
Proficiency in editing, proofreading, and content revision. Strong understanding of editorial standards and publication processes. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with teams and meet deadlines. Familiarity with UN editorial guidelines is beneficial.
